The Eternal Range of Karmic Memory

By Stephen Proskauer MD | July 29, 2009

Today, in Western culture we commonly regard our experience as a single life, extending in time from early childhood to the present, defined by our subjective memory—a running commentary of thoughts, memories, sensations, feelings, dreams and fantasies. Rooted in the Judaeo-Christian tradition, most Western religions recognize only a linear passage from birth to death, with various types of eternal hereafter awaiting the soul after leaving the body. There are no second chances at a human life. Whether we go to heaven or hell after death depends on how well we live up to the religious rules of conduct in the one life we are accorded. In some religions, this amounts to a rigid reward/punishment system that does not recognize any possibility of learning through the consequences of our actions in one life and trying again in another life. Theological debates aside, the doctrine of a single human lifetime followed by eternal reward or damnation does not seem to fit any of the data from Karmic Therapy, even work with patients raised in orthodox Christian traditions such as Catholicism. When exploring the karmic memory of a person, what emerges is almost inconceivably vast. What is inside you?
