Feelings of Rejection from the Prenatal Period

By Stephen Proskauer MD | September 17, 2009

Melissa had been feeling rejected, resentful and guilty all her life in relation to her mother. She also complained of chronic pain in her lower back. When we focused on the prenatal period, she recalled her mother having the same back pain in the fourth month of the pregnancy. At that time her mother was thinking to herself, “I can’t wait to be rid of this child that’s causing me so much pain.”

After releasing the emotional charge on these words, Melissa realized that her feelings of guilt and rejection were based on a double misunderstanding of her mother’s thoughts. First of all, she took her mother’s statement as a personal rejection, rather than a simple reaction to the physical discomforts of the pregnancy. To make matters worse, she imagined her mother had meant that she wanted to banish Melissa completely from her life, rather than just to get the baby born and out of her body in order to relieve the pain. After coming to these realizations, Melissa wept with relief at how much her mother had really loved her and with grief at how much she had missed feeling this love before. The back pain was gone and Melissa felt new energy moving through her body.
