Emotional Impoverishment Rooted in Early Infancy
By Stephen Proskauer MD | October 9, 2009
Matthew recalled the frustration of nursing at his mother’s dry breast a few months after birth. Later in life, Matthew found himself depressed and stuck in an unnourishing relationship, unconsciously repeating his fruitless struggle to get enough. He kept having thoughts of powerlessness and deprivation (”I can’t do this” and “There’s never enough for me”) related to this infant starvation experience. Matthew found he could deal more effectively with his adult relationships after letting go of these negative ideas from long ago.
