Dissociation and Shamanic Initiation

By Stephen Proskauer MD | March 8, 2010

Dissociating from the body may make it difficult to stay grounded and to feel at home in the physical world, but on the positive side, the dissociation that so often results from severe injury temporarily protects us from overwhelming fear and pain, loosens our attachment to the physical senses, and creates a spiritual opening into a larger realm of consciousness. The “wounded healer” in the shamanic tradition journeys to the spirit realm to make contact with spiritual allies and healing forces. Without the wound and the resulting dissociation from the body the journey could not begin. On the journey, the shaman experiences a rebirth and the wound is transformed into a vehicle for spiritual growth and for healing others.
