Individual Need for Gratification
By Stephen Proskauer MD | April 29, 2010
In our era, many relationships reach a crossroads at which desire for individual need gratification begins to yield in greater or lesser degree to the urge to assist one another on the spiritual path. There is an expanding literature now on the topic of intimate relationship as a vehicle for personal growth and spiritual evolution. No matter how committed a couple may be to helping one another, however, there is a limit to the depth of intimacy that can be attained as long as the couple attempts to function as a unit in isolation from the larger community. Cultivating the little world of the couple as a separate entity can support an illusory and egoistic sense of isolation from the whole. Shared service to others breaks down this false sense of separateness and creates a larger container for intimacy.
