About Dr. Proskauer

After completing training in medicine and psychiatry at Harvard
Medical School and Boston University Medical Center in 1971, Dr.
Proskauer devoted four decades to practice as an innovative psychiatrist, psychotherapist, spiritual seeker and healer. During his residency in child and adolescent psychiatry he designed and conducted a clinical research project on time limited treatment of children that earned awards from the American Association of Psychiatric Clinics for Children and from the American Academy of Child Psychiatry.

Dr. Proskauer’s evolving interests led him from private psychiatric practice into humanistic psychology then into Zen Buddhism and shamanism and full circle back to psychiatry as he synthesized an integrative form of healing practice as a spiritually oriented physician. Along the way he led hundreds of trainings and workshops, published ten papers in professional journals and books, edited three volumes of Zen wisdom for his teacher Genpo Merzel Roshi, and wrote his first book, Karmic Therapy: Healing the Split Psyche.

Currently Dr. Proskauer practices child, adolescent and adult psychiatry
at the Sanctuary for Healing and Integration in Salt Lake City. He specializes in treatment of Bipolar Spectrum Disorders, severe childhood abuse, and PTSD. His integrative approach utilizes psychotherapy, meditation, and shamanic healing combined with nutritional counseling and judicious use of psychotropic medication. In 2009, Dr. Proskauer founded the Society for Integrative Treatment of Trauma and Abuse (SITTA) with the intention of making education, training and treatment in this field more available and affordable for colleagues, patients and the general public.
